OPS-MATH Spreadsheets
Platform Support Questions Answered

Why is OPS-MATH an executable installation and not just .xls files?

The source Excel file is compiled to an executable using the Doneex XCell Compiler. This provides several benefits.

  • It allows all of the macros to run properly on all system configurations. All buttons in OPS-MATH run macros to provide hints, answers, insert new data sets, adjust screen settings, etc.
  • Excel .xls files can be intentionally or unintentionally modified and then sent to others. This can introduce version, quality, or security problems. Compiling the file makes it much more secure against hacking and modification.
  • It allows your installation to be digitally authenticated and ensures instructors and students are getting the latest quality version.
  • It protects the intellectual property.

Why must I have Excel 2002 or later installed on my computer?

The Doneex XCell Compiler is an Excel add-in. You can think of the compiled executable as a wrapper for the underlying Excel file. Upon program launch, OPS-MATH Spreadsheets will look for a compatible Excel version and, if not found, will display a message, "This application requires Microsoft Excel version 2000 or higher."

Workarounds for Excel 2010 "Click-to-Run" or 64-bit installations.

In Excel 2010 clicking "File - Help" will show the "About" screen that will indicate "Click to Run" if applicable and whether or not it was installed as 32-bit or 64-bit.

Click-to-Run Workaround. Attempting to run OPS-MATH Spreadsheets with a Click-to-Run installation will display the error message, "This application requires Microsoft Excel version 2000 or higher." Microsoft explains the issue and the workaround in this Microsoft document http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982431

64-bit Workaround. Attempting to run OPS-MATH Spreadsheets with a 64-bit installation will display the error message, "Application launch blocked by another program." The choice of 32-bit or 64-bit was made upon installation of Microsoft Office or Excel and the decision is reversable by reinstalling as 32-bit. Refer to your Microsoft documentation for additional guidance. For a more techical explanation of 32-bit and 64-bit benefits and issues refer to this Microsoft document http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681792.aspx

Why won't OPS-MATH run under OpenOffice?

As stated above the Doneex XCell Compiler must use Excel in the background. Also, OpenOffice will not run native Excel macros as stated in the OpenOffice help system: "With a few exceptions, Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org cannot run the same macro code." Testing of the .xls file under OpenOffice confirms that the macros do not run. For more information refer to the OpenOffice help system and search for "macros;in MS Office documents."

Why won't OPS-MATH run under Apple operating systems?

The Doneex XCell Complier does not support Apple operating systems. In general, Apple operating systems do not run PC executable files like those produced by the compiler.
